Title: Robert's Big Adventure Our topic and health area is Physical Activity and Nutrition. The functional knowledge incorporated into the story is "People need healthy food and regular physical activity to feel good and grow."
Our main character's name is Robert. He is 7 years old. His conflict is him vs. himself; he is overweight. Every morning when he wakes up, he feels sad and outcast because he can't do the things that other kids can do. All the other kids play soccer and basketball but he can't because he doesn't have enough energy to run around for a long time. He has a older sister named Amanda, age 16 . Page 1-- This is Robert. Robert is 7 years old. Robert has a problem. Can you tell what it is? (young, brown-haired, brown eyes, overweight boy.) Page 2-- Robert is overweight! He is very sad that he can't do the things that other kids do. (Other kids are playing basketball while Robert is standing on the side, upset because he cannot play any sports.) Page 3-- Robert is at school. The other kids are making fun of him for being so overweight . (Robert is in school with all the other classmates laughing at him). Page 4-- Robert gets home from school looking very sad. (Robert being sad). Page 5-- Robert tells his mom he is being teased at school. (His mom looks empathetic while Robert tells her the story.) Page 6-- His mom feels bad for him. She says, "I'm going to help you, okay, honey? (Robert's mom looks sad and upset.) Page 7-- Even though his mom helps him try to stop eating junk food, he can't stop. (Robert eating junk food while watching T.V. and his mom is standing on the side telling him to stop.) Page 8-- The next day in school, all he thinks about is junk food. He still can't play games with the other kids. (Robert is in school and the other kids are playing games and Robert is standing on the side thinking about only junk food.) Page 9-- Robert returns home crying and tells his sister that he needs help losing weight and being healthy so that he won't be teased in school. (Robert is telling his sister what happens to him in school everyday.) Page 10-- His sister feels bad for him too. She says that she is going to try to help him. (Robert's sister look sad and upset.) Page 11-- His sister show him that there are other foods that are healthy but still taste good. (Robert's sister brings vegetables and fruits for Robert to eat and taste.) Page 12-- His sister show him that he can eat junk food, as long as it is in moderation, and he is eating healthy foods as well. (Robert's sister gave him a half of a chocolate bar, because he ate all of his healthy dinner.) Page 13-- Over the next school year, Robert loses some weight from eating healthily and exercising regularly. Now he could play soccer and basketball with all the other kids! (Robert looks normal now and is eating vegetables and healthy foods.) Page 14-- Robert has a lot of friends at school. He is happy that now he can do all the things that other kids can do! (Robert is surrounded by many friends now because he lost a lot of weight.)
